Key stakeholders from the Australian biking industry are banding together to provide Grassroots Scholarships for our developing youth.

As we settle into the new norm in the wake of the last 18 months, cycling is having an unprecedented surge in popularity, growing in some cities by more than 270 percent. The COVID-19 lockdown saw whole families invest in new bikes for all members, whilst others dusted off their old favourites with new enthusiasm.

Recreational riding around Australia has seen major growth with world class bike trails developed across all states, whilst success stories such as Derby Tasmania continue to encourage other city councils to invest significantly in their own trail networks.

With this influx of riders, also comes a generation of new athletes and exciting new potential for the sport. Recent cycling events have seen unprecedented demand for participation, with registrations selling out in a number of days rather than weeks and months, especially in youth age groups.

The development of the sport is now also attracting world class events to our shores with the introduction of the iconic Sea Otter Classic now launching as Sea Otter Australia this October. Presented by Bicycle SA, Sea Otter Australia will thrill cycling enthusiasts of all disciplines, ages and abilities in Canberra’s Stromlo Forest Park ACT from 1-4 October.

Australia’s premium bike care ambassadors KRUSH have teamed up with Sea Otter Australia to launch the new KRUSH Grassroots Scholarship Program, with Aussie Distributor Bikecorp, FIST Handwear and leading Australian online bike retailer Pushys.

The KRUSH Grassroots Scholarship will offer an amazing opportunity providing essential tools and industry support for developing Australian riders. The package includes over $8000+ worth of bike care products, store credit, coaching, rider mentoring and financial support for travel expenses and race entry fees to help elevate their riding career.

Exclusive one-on-one mentoring sessions will be lead by ambassadors; trail builder, Junior National Champion and Canyon Team Rider Baxter Maiwald (VIC); and 8x BMX & Mountain Bike World Champion and 2x Olympian Caroline Buchanan (ACT). Whilst coaching sessions will be offered courtesy of Gravity Oz founder Shannon Rademaker. Shannon holds the highest level of professional coaching accreditation in Australia as a PMBIA L3 advanced athlete coach with over 15 years experience.

Scholarships will be awarded to two junior Australian riders (1 x female and 1 x male), over the course of the Sea Otter Australia weekend in October. Successful applicants will be selected by scholarship ambassadors and industry representatives, based on a combination of competitive race results, sportsmanship and the ability to demonstrate enthusiasm, ambition and dedication via the application process.

We are thrilled to have Caroline and Baxter on board and the generous support of FIST, PUSHYS, BIKE CORP, Gravity Oz, Sea Otter and our other… scholarship partners, it’s going to be an awesome opportunity for these young up-and-comers.”

Sea Otter’s Christian Haag said “This is a great initiative that kick-starts our broader legacy program. The KRUSH Grassroots Scholarship encapsulates exactly what Sea Otter is all about, a family friendly environment offering industry participation to support our next generation of riders.”
